The state of the current electronic medical record (EMR) industry has coalesced from a confluence of events in the past five years, with an abundance of articles and reports espousing the need to improve quality and reduce errors in health care. A leader in this area, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) has released several reports outlining the growing need for change in health care, placing technology as a central change agent. As part of the technology piece, provider organizations, from physician-based practices to inpatient centers, have begun a multi-year adoption process for EMR’s, though the actual rate of adoption is widely debated for all the providers. Initial EMR products and stories of failed implementations plagued the market in the past. Currently, similar stories are not uncommon, however, the EMR product is no longer a basic system wrought with workflow errors. In the past 24 months, companies have released advanced solutions that include additional decision support tools, advanced templating and integration, and a number of other highly functional upgrades. In addition, several product releases were for integrated solutions, which combine an EMR with a physician practice management system (PPMS) solution. This integrated EMR-PPMS solution continues to be highly successful in the market. With growing physician awareness about the benefits of an EMR and strong government backing for its widespread adoption, the market has set a steady path for EMR acceptance.
