China is the world's second largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity. The country also has the highest population in the world with an estimated population growth rate of 0.6 percent in 2007 over the previous year. It is fast emerging as one of the largest markets in the world, with Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin and Wuhan, China's major cities, being the important centers of economic activity.
China has emerged as one of the preferred bases for manufacturing in the world, as the country promises low production costs for companies. Though the Chinese Communist Party rules China, liberalization and open capital markets are the main policy issues that are being addressed by the current Chinese leaders.
The majority of Chinese are employed in rural areas, although a large number of them have been migrating to the cities. The lack of labor mobility and corruption are major constraints, which hinder economic growth and have led to regional inequalities. Industries have always played a major role in providing employment and growth for the Chinese economy. The services sector has been growing in recent years, which is a sign of the changing market dynamics.
